Tension Release Exercises
Latest Research
In the past, most definitions of trauma have come from a western framework based in clinical psychology. In more recent times though, fantastic breakthroughs and advances have been made by pioneers in the field such as Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score), Dr. Peter Levine (In an Unspoken Voice), and Dr. Stephen Porges (The Polyvagal Theory).
Together, they recognise that as much as trauma can impact one’s mental state, it is significantly held and perpetuated in the body through deep unconscious patterns of tension within and throughout the muscles and nervous system.
A person’s body holds memories of the past which have been overwhelming for that person. So, as long as their adaptive processes remain activated in response to these memories, their whole organism remains in a state of trauma or easily triggered as if the event was still happening now.
Somatic body focussed therapy has become key to helping resolve what had mostly been seen as emotional, psychological or behavioural challenges.
And now, through Dr. David Bercelli and TRE, these deep tension patterns in our body can begin to shake free and unwind as our body leads the way.
